The mistake you make when putting on your car seat belt, according to a driving instructor: "It shouldn't be tight around your stomach, neck, or shoulder."

We all agree that putting on our seatbelts is mandatory as soon as we get into our car. But have you ever wondered if you're wearing it correctly? Since it's a practically automatic movement, we often don't even realize it . And even less so if the vehicle isn't ours . That's why one of the latest TikTok videos from Autoescuela Merinero , a social network with 63,000 followers, gives us the keys to using it , which goes beyond just clicking and sprinting off.

First problem: rushing: "It's worth taking a second longer, but be safe," the driving school reminds us. "The first thing we have to do is fasten our seatbelt properly . To do that, it has to sit on the hipbone, not on the stomach, but positioned on the hipbone and pass through the middle of the collarbone," the instructor reminds us. And the height, which is adjustable in most cars, is also important: "Adjust it so it passes through the middle of the collarbone. Not on the neck because it can cause injuries, nor on the shoulder because that wouldn't be effective, okay?" we can see in the video.

Not only that, but before setting off, we should make one last adjustment for greater safety : "Just a little tightening to make the seatbelt tighter, okay? The seatbelt has a pretensioner. When we have an impact, what it does is pull the seatbelt back and it will retract us. It will press us closer to the seat, which will give us more support ," the driving school teaches us in this practical class.

Having more restraints will allow us to drive more safely , as we won't be as sensitive to sudden movements. But the Merinero Driving School gives us another vital reason to make this last adjustment: "If we have an impact, our body will experience significant deceleration. We can sustain quite considerable injuries. So, what does the seatbelt do? Look how cool! The seatbelt fabric expands , slowing you down, so that the body stops in a second, instead of a tenth (of a second). Being properly positioned will help minimize internal injuries and even save our lives," assures the instructor. Almost nothing.

And to end the video, they remind us of something that can save us from serious facial injuries caused by the airbag. Never cross your hands: "We have to keep at least 20 or 25 cm of distance from the airbag, okay? And then, don't cross your hands . Because if you turn and cross your hand, if the airbag deploys, it'll blow your face off," they explain in the video. A compelling reason to avoid this bad behavior while driving.
